Blaj Schools anniversary marks milestone in Romanian education

October 11 marks the anniversary of the founding of the Blaj Schools in 1754, a pivotal moment in Romanian cultural and educational history. Established by Greek Catholic Bishop Petru Pavel Aron and Inochentie Micu, these institutions—comprising primary, Latin, and priestly schools—served as the first educational centers conducted in the Romanian language in Transylvania.

The movement, known as the Transylvanian School, played a critical role in the intellectual and spiritual formation of Romanians, helping to affirm national identity and human dignity during a period when access to education was highly restricted. Since 2014, October 11 has been officially celebrated as the Day of the Transylvanian School.
