Ipiales water crisis: Authorities explore new sources and intake relocation
Authorities in Nariño are evaluating several strategies to address the water supply and quality crisis in Ipiales. One potential solution involves utilizing a water source in Cuaspud-Carlosama, which reportedly averages 1,000 liters per second. However, local officials emphasize that any project must undergo technical, environmental, and hydraulic studies to ensure the resource is viable and does not negatively impact local communities.
Simultaneously, the Río Blanco, a strategic source for Ipiales, is facing severe contamination concerns. Community cleaning efforts have highlighted the presence of waste, leading to calls for stricter oversight of industrial activities, such as dairy processing and animal slaughterhouses, along the basin.
To mitigate these issues, the Veeduría Ciudadana por el Agua de Ipiales has expressed support for relocating the Río Blanco intake point further upstream. This move aims to reduce exposure to pollutants and simplify water treatment processes. Corponariño is also working to update the water resource management plan for the region, which includes Cumbal, Cuaspud-Carlosama, Aldana, and Ipiales.
