Blankenberge implements 50 km/h speed limits on nine polder roads

The Blankenberge city council has approved a new 50 km/h speed limit for nine municipal roads located within the polder area. The decision, passed on September 15, 2026, aims to curb through-traffic using narrow rural roads as shortcuts to avoid busier main thoroughfares during peak hours.

The affected streets include Lissewegestraat, Breeweg, Bosstraat, Groendijk, Doornhaagstraat, Blankenbergse Dijk, Scharebrugstraat, Kuiperscheweg, and Hooistraat. Local authorities noted that these roads were not designed for heavy transit, and the increase in traffic has compromised road safety, inconvenienced residents, and threatened the rural character of the landscape.

In addition to addressing traffic volume, the measure is intended to protect the limited infrastructure available for pedestrians and cyclists. The new regulations will be implemented using C43 traffic signs or 50 km/h zone signs once officially announced by the city.
