Blatnik Bridge replacement begins with $1 billion in federal funding

Construction has officially commenced on the replacement of the John A. Blatnik Bridge, a critical infrastructure link connecting Duluth, Minnesota, and Superior, Wisconsin. The project is supported by over $1 billion in funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation, with additional contributions from the Minnesota and Wisconsin Departments of Transportation.

The existing bridge, which handles approximately 33,000 vehicles daily, is being replaced due to its deteriorating condition. The current structure is scheduled to close to traffic in early 2027, with the new bridge expected to be completed by 2031.

During the construction period, traffic will be rerouted to the Bong Bridge located about one mile south. Local officials and business leaders have expressed concerns regarding potential economic impacts, including increased traffic congestion, higher fuel consumption, and potential revenue losses for businesses in Superior that rely on customers from Minnesota.
