Bled Strategic Forum convenes European leaders to discuss security and EU future
The 21st Bled Strategic Forum, held in Slovenia under the theme ‘The Power to Shape the Future’, has convened regional leaders to discuss the geopolitical and economic future of Europe. Key participants include Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, and Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković.
Prime Minister Janša emphasized that Europe must address four strategic tests: security, resilience, demography, and credibility. He advocated for EU enlargement into the Western Balkans, warning that failure to expand would allow other powers to fill the vacuum. He also highlighted the need to reduce strategic dependencies, specifically citing Europe’s energy reliance on Russia and its dependency on China for critical minerals and semiconductors.
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar criticized the European Union for a lack of political leadership and excessive bureaucracy. He argued that the bloc must decide whether it aims to merely survive or to win, suggesting a shift toward economic competitiveness and defense-industry cooperation. Magyar also addressed the treatment of Hungary by Brussels, stating that the country faces unfairness regarding migration policies and EU court-mandated fines for border protection. He noted that his government has already reduced the national budget deficit by 2.5 billion euros.
