Germany issues swimming warnings due to blue algae blooms

Health authorities in several German regions have issued warnings due to the presence of blue algae (cyanobacteria) in various swimming areas. In the Saale-Orla-Kreis, the swimming warning for the Bleilochstausee has been expanded to include the Saalburg-Beach and Kloster sections following observations of greenish water turbidity. While laboratory tests for microcystin have not yet exceeded limits, further diagnostic sampling is underway.

In the Weilheim-Schongau district, the health department has advised against swimming in several waters, including the Dorfweiher in Eglfing, the Koppenbergweiher in Habach, and the Eckenbühler Weiher in Obersöchering. Cyanobacteria can produce toxins that cause skin irritation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Children and dogs are noted as being particularly at risk.

Other regional reports highlight various aspects of the swimming season, including the largest lakes in the Allgäu region, free swimming spots in the Black Forest, and specialized dog swimming events in Solingen and Iserlohn.
