World of Warcraft: Forever beta sees record demand and server strain

The beta test for World of Warcraft: Forever, a new Classic-style spin-off from Blizzard Entertainment, has experienced unprecedented player demand, leading to significant server instability, disconnects, and long login queues. Developers Tom Ellis and Josh Greenfield noted that the influx of players exceeded expectations, overwhelming the testing environment.

Despite technical hurdles, the beta has seen high engagement, with Twitch viewership reaching hundreds of thousands. Players are exploring new features such as the Skyborne race and a revamped first-and-last-name character system. However, the new naming system has caused controversy, as Blizzard has begun removing beta access for players using offensive or inappropriate name combinations.

Blizzard is also addressing economic and gameplay concerns. Senior designer Josh Greenfield warned that the company will aggressively punish real-money gold trading to protect the game's economy. Additionally, Game Director Ion Hazzikostas announced that the retail version of WoW will implement a Heroic World Tier system to mirror the challenging open-world experience found in the Forever version. The full game is scheduled for release on November 4, 2026.
