Blizzard shifts focus to Diablo 5, ending Diablo 4 expansions

Blizzard Entertainment has announced that development is shifting toward Diablo 5, which is scheduled for a Spring 2029 release. This decision means that Diablo 4 will no longer receive major paid expansions, though it will continue to receive regular seasonal updates, such as the upcoming Season of Hell’s Legacy.

Executive producer Matt Zitterman explained that the move to a full sequel rather than further expansions was driven by a desire to implement deep structural changes and tell a more ambitious story. Zitterman noted that the team felt the central villain, Diablo, required his own dedicated game to properly execute a narrative on par with previous installments.

Diablo 5 is expected to feature significant gameplay shifts, including the removal of safe cities and zones to reflect a world where Diablo has already won and Sanctuary lies in ruins. The sequel is slated to include procedural dungeons, returning classes like the Demon Hunter and Monk, and a new Plague Knight class.
