Guinea celebrates 68th independence anniversary with presidential pardons

Guinea celebrated its 68th anniversary of independence on October 2, 2026, with ceremonies held across the country, including major events in Conakry at the Place des Martyrs. President Mamadi Doumbouya led official commemorations, paying tribute to national martyrs and emphasizing the historical significance of the 1958 referendum.

In a significant legal development, President Doumbouya granted presidential pardons to 217 convicted individuals. This measure includes opposition leader Aliou Bah, who had been detained since early 2025. The pardons are subject to a mandatory 45-day civic training and reintegration program.

The national theme for this year’s celebration was ‘Inspiring from the past to build the future together: our youth’. Addressing the nation, the President highlighted the importance of the youth, who make up over 70 percent of the population, and presented the Simandou 2040 program as a strategic driver for the country’s economic transformation and sovereignty.
