Block joins x402 Foundation to enable Bitcoin Lightning payments for AI agents

Block has joined the x402 Foundation to support an open payment standard designed for AI agents. By integrating Bitcoin Lightning Network support into the x402 protocol, Block aims to facilitate low-cost, high-volume microtransactions required for agentic commerce.

The x402 standard utilizes the HTTP ‘402 Payment Required’ response code, allowing AI agents to automatically pay for digital resources—such as API access, data, and computing power—without human intervention or the need for traditional credit card accounts. This enables seamless machine-to-machine transactions for services like data queries or tool rentals.

Block joins a coalition of major technology and finance entities within the Linux Foundation-backed x402 Foundation, including Google, Microsoft, AWS, and Coinbase. Steve Lee, head of Block’s Bitcoin development initiative Spiral, described the move as a “concrete step toward making Bitcoin everyday money for people and the agents acting on their behalf.”

While the technology offers a real-time, low-fee alternative to stablecoins, challenges remain regarding the implementation of secure permission management, refund processes, and anti-money laundering protocols for autonomous agent transactions.
