Blockchain privacy becomes critical for institutional adoption
Financial institutions face a growing tension between the transparency of public blockchains and the need for confidentiality. While tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) exceeded $35 billion by July 2026, most major US banks continue to utilize private or permissioned infrastructure to protect sensitive data.
Public ledgers expose transaction amounts, wallet activity, and treasury movements, which could allow competitors to deduce institutional strategies or liquidity needs. Furthermore, open mempools create risks such as Maximal Extractable Value (MEV), front-running, and sandwich attacks. The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has previously raised concerns regarding how these activities impact market integrity.
To address these challenges, the industry is integrating various technologies, including zero-knowledge proofs, Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), Multi-Party Computation (MPC), and fully homomorphic encryption. Solutions from providers like Canton, ZKsync, Fireblocks, and Chainlink aim to facilitate selective disclosure, allowing firms to remain private from competitors while remaining transparent to regulators.
