Blood centers in Brazil report critical supply shortages

Blood centers in Brazil are reporting critical shortages in blood supplies. In Santa Catarina, HEMOSC has issued an urgent call for donors, specifically highlighting that O positive and O negative stocks have fallen to reduced or alert levels. The institution noted that heavy rainfall in various regions has influenced the decrease in donor numbers.

In Amazonas, Hemoam reported a 40% drop in blood stocks during the second week of September. The center is currently averaging 130 donations per day, significantly below the daily target of 250 required to meet state demand. This shortage impacts surgeries, cancer treatments, and emergency care for accident victims. Both institutions emphasize the need for new volunteers and the return of regular donors to ensure safe levels for the remainder of the year.
