Blood Donation Critical for Hospitals, WHO and Canadian Blood Services Say
Voluntary, unpaid blood donations remain the backbone of safe national blood supplies, according to the World Health Organization. Regular whole‑blood donations support emergency trauma care, scheduled surgeries and patients with chronic blood disorders, while shortages can force hospitals to postpone elective procedures.
Canadian Blood Services stresses that every blood type, especially O‑negative, is urgently needed to keep inventories stable. The agency also collects cord blood, whose stem cells can treat malignant blood disorders, immune deficiencies and metabolic diseases, and assures expectant parents that the collection process is safe for both mother and infant. Ongoing public‑health campaigns aim to encourage first‑time and repeat donors, emphasizing screening protocols that protect donor safety and product quality.
