Blood donation drives scheduled across Germany and Austria in August 2026

The Austrian Red Cross highlighted a recent stem‑cell match when seven‑year‑old Michael from Lower Austria met his 24‑year‑old donor Lukas in Vienna, underscoring the rarity of a compatible non‑relative match—estimated at one in 500,000. Michael was diagnosed with leukemia in 2019 and required the transplant to survive.

Across Germany, the Bavarian Red Cross warned that daily demand reaches roughly 2,000 blood units, while the Institute for Transfusion Medicine Suhl in Thuringia reports a need for about 350 units each day. In Austria’s Styria, about 50,000 units are required annually. To meet these needs, numerous blood‑donation appointments have been organised for August 2026 in Bavaria, Thuringia, and across Austria, with specific dates and venues listed by local Red Cross branches.

All participating organisations have launched a modernised blood‑donation app that provides donors with personal dashboards, eligibility checks, appointment booking, reminders and digital donation records, aiming to simplify the process and attract first‑time donors during the summer holiday period.
