Blood donation organizations urge public support during National Preparedness Month

In observance of National Preparedness Month in September, blood donation organizations are urging the public to contribute to maintain stable blood supplies for emergencies.

Vitalant is calling for donors of all blood types, noting that Type O is particularly critical. O-negative blood is essential for emergency situations where a patient's blood type cannot be immediately determined, while O-positive blood serves more than 85% of the population. Vitalant has scheduled several community blood drives throughout Monterey County, including locations at Hartnell College and Monterey Peninsula College.

The American Red Cross is also emphasizing the need for blood and platelet donations to ensure readiness for emergencies. To encourage participation, the organization is offering incentives, such as a $15 e-gift card for donations made by October 18, and limited-quantity pickleball equipment for donors in September who mention the word ‘pickleball’. Scheduled drives are taking place across various locations in the Kennewick, Stanfield, Hermiston, and Walla Walla regions.
