Blood donation services highlight need for regular donors
Blood donation services in Germany and Austria are highlighting the critical need for regular donors to maintain medical supplies. In Germany, Herbert Schober from Eslarn has reached a milestone of 150 full blood donations. Each donation can be separated into red blood cells, platelets, and plasma, potentially supporting up to three different patients during surgeries, accidents, or cancer treatments.
In Austria, health officials warn of seasonal shortages because blood products are only shelf-stable for 42 days. While a blood unit is needed every 90 seconds in Austria, fewer than five percent of the population donates regularly. The Red Cross Styria is conducting campaigns to encourage more frequent donations to ensure a steady supply for life-saving medical procedures.
