Italy blood and organ donation initiatives see local growth

Various regions across Italy are reporting significant activity in blood and organ donation through community initiatives and medical advancements.

In Cagliari, the Policlinico Duilio Casula has seen a 500% increase in multi-organ procurement in 2026 compared to the previous year, with recent successful transplants involving the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. In Corato, a group of striking farmers spontaneously visited a hospital to donate blood, many for the first time.

Local associations are also marking milestones: the Avis municipal section in Crotone collected 22 blood bags during a recent solidarity day, while the Associazione Friulana Donatori di Sangue is celebrating 50 years in Meduno with the inauguration of a commemorative stele. In Calolziocorte, AVIS Giovanni Mapelli is honoring 48 donors during its 61st annual Donor Day. Additionally, the Fratres Montegiorgio group held its traditional Donor Festival, featuring the launch of a new website and a commemorative book.
