Blood glucose levels can impact brain function and cognition

Blood glucose levels can significantly impact brain function, with symptoms varying based on an individual's ability to regulate sugar. High blood sugar may cause symptoms ranging from mild to severe, including brain fog, slower thinking, memory and concentration issues, fatigue, mood changes, confusion, and in extreme cases, seizures or loss of consciousness. Conversely, low blood sugar can also lead to confusion, seizures, or loss of consciousness.

Mary Feldman, a neurologist at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, noted that while a sugary dessert may not immediately affect a healthy individual, those with diabetes or insulin resistance may experience reduced blood flow to certain brain areas during glucose spikes. This can result in brain fog, memory problems, and increased anxiety or sadness. Endocrinologist Joseph Barrera from Providence Mission Hospital added that changes in clear thinking can begin several hours after a glucose rise, potentially exacerbated by dehydration.
