Blood Pond Hell in Beppu, Japan draws thousands with its crimson hot springs

Blood Pond Hell (Chinoike Jigoku) is a geothermal hot spring located in Beppu, Japan. The water and mud are a deep red colour caused by iron oxide and magnesium oxide, giving the pool a "blood" appearance. The source temperature reaches about 78 °C, making swimming impossible, and roughly 1,800 tons of hot water surface each day over an area of about 1,300 m².

The site has been known for more than 1,300 years, with references dating back to the Nara period. It is protected as a national natural monument and is a major stop on Beppu’s popular “Hell Tour,” attracting thousands of visitors annually despite strict bans on entering the water.
