Blood pressure drugs linked to lower vascular dementia risk as new test detects FTLD‑TDP

Recent studies suggest that certain centrally acting ACE inhibitors, which can cross the blood‑brain barrier, may modestly lower the risk of vascular dementia. Research published in Nature Aging and Age and Ageing found that treating hypertension with these medications was associated with reduced dementia incidence, indicating a link between heart health and brain health.

In a separate advance, researchers at Mass General Brigham have developed an ultrasensitive digital seed amplification assay that detects abnormal TDP‑43 protein seeds in cerebrospinal fluid. The test clearly distinguished individuals with frontotemporal lobar degeneration‑TDP (FTLD‑TDP) from healthy controls and showed higher seed levels in patients with more severe symptoms, offering a potential biomarker for earlier and more accurate diagnosis.
