Blood Shortage Emergency Prompts Urgent Donor Appeals in US

Bloodworks Northwest announced a "Code Red" emergency, reporting that regional hospitals have less than a one‑to‑two‑day supply of blood. The nonprofit, which serves 95% of hospitals in the Pacific Northwest, is urging residents to donate and is offering a $10,000 gas‑card prize for a July donor.

The American Red Cross has likewise declared a national emergency, noting a 25% drop in blood supply for June, especially for platelets and O‑positive and B‑negative units. The agency warns that the shortage could affect emergency departments, operating rooms, labor and delivery units, and cancer treatment.
