Blood sugar regulation and factors affecting glucose levels

Maintaining stable blood glucose levels is essential for managing diabetes and preventing complications. Blood sugar fluctuations can be caused by diet, medication, physical activity, stress, and irregular meal patterns.

Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) often presents with symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, blurred vision, and slow wound healing. Conversely, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) can occur rapidly, characterized by tremors, sweating, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, dizziness, and confusion. A glucose level below 70 mg/dL is considered a critical threshold requiring immediate attention.

Blood sugar levels can also rise temporarily in individuals without diabetes due to several factors. Consuming high-carbohydrate foods like white rice or sugary drinks causes rapid glucose spikes. Additionally, physiological stress triggers the release of hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which prompt the liver to release more glucose into the bloodstream. Other factors influencing glucose regulation include sleep deprivation, which affects insulin sensitivity, and intense physical exercise, which may temporarily raise levels due to adrenaline spikes.
