Bloom Energy and California Resources partner for 1 GW fuel cell projects

Bloom Energy and California Resources Corporation (CRC) have signed a memorandum of understanding to evaluate the development of at least 1 gigawatt of solid-oxide fuel cell (SOFC) power generation in California. The proposed projects, located in Central and Northern California, aim to integrate fuel cell technology with carbon capture and permanent storage.

Through CRC’s carbon management unit, Carbon TerraVault, the partnership intends to utilize CO2 transportation and underground sequestration capabilities. The projects could provide up to 3 million metric tons of CO2 per year for capture and storage. The high concentration of CO2 in Bloom Energy’s SOFC exhaust is expected to improve carbon capture efficiency and reduce costs.

The companies are assessing both front-of-the-meter projects to supply the utility grid and behind-the-meter installations to provide on-site power for industrial users and AI data centers. The initiative seeks to meet the rising electricity demands of critical infrastructure while expanding low-carbon energy options.
