Bloom Energy fuel cells and coal power fuel AI data center surge

Artificial intelligence workloads are driving a rapid rise in electricity demand for data centers. Industry forecasts estimate AI data centers will need about 200 GW of power by 2030, up from just over 100 GW today. Traditional utilities are struggling to meet this demand, prompting operators to seek alternative sources.

Bloom Energy’s solid‑oxide fuel cells, which can run on hydrogen, natural gas or biogas, are being deployed to provide on‑site power. The company expanded its agreement with Oracle to supply 1.2 GW of capacity within a 2.8 GW deal, and Equinix has already installed 73 MW of fuel‑cell capacity with contracts for an additional 35 MW across 19 sites in six U.S. states. These systems can be installed in less than a year, offering a fast‑track solution to grid bottlenecks.

At the same time, the coal fleet is re‑emerging as a back‑stop for AI data center power. A bidding war in West Virginia over the 710‑MW Longview coal plant highlights utilities’ interest in keeping coal units online or even building new ones to meet surging demand. In the PJM market, capacity prices have risen by more than 1,000 % since 2024, underscoring the urgency of securing reliable electricity for the expanding AI infrastructure.
