Bloomington Man Charged with Biting Newborn's Face

Eighteen‑year‑old Kaden Manuel Lewis Shrum was arrested in Bloomington, Indiana, after police determined that a 9‑day‑old infant had extensive bruising on the left cheek consistent with bite marks. The infant was taken to a regional hospital where medical staff confirmed the injuries. Shrum told investigators he had "nibbled" and then repeatedly bit the baby’s cheek in an attempt to quiet the child, later describing the result as looking like a "busted up egg." He was charged with battery resulting in bodily injury to a person under 14, a Level 5 felony, and is also facing separate felony charges for battery by means of a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness, plus a misdemeanor battery charge in an unrelated case. After being taken to Monroe County Jail, Shrum posted a $5,000 bond and remains in custody pending a jury trial scheduled for January 11, 2027.
