Bloomington parents charged in death of 14-year-old daughter
Jerry Mayfield Jr. and Toris Mayfield face felony charges following the death of their 14-year-old daughter, Jamiyah Mayfield, in Bloomington, Indiana. The victim died on July 2, 2025, from complications related to severe malnutrition and dehydration.
Investigators report that the girl was kept in a bedroom that could only be locked from the outside and featured a window that could not be opened. Court documents and affidavits state that the parents used a Ring camera inside her room to monitor her remotely. Footage allegedly showed significant weight loss, hair loss, and marks on her body over several months.
While the parents claimed the child had an eating disorder, medical records from a May 2025 visit to IU Health noted weight loss and leg swelling, yet no specialist follow-up was sought. The victim had been withdrawn from the Monroe County Public School System in February 2025 to be homeschooled, after which her health reportedly declined rapidly.
