Indonesia celebrates 81st Independence Day with nationwide festivities
Indonesia celebrated its 81st Independence Day with widespread festivities across the nation. In Jakarta, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya reported that over 150,000 people gathered at Istana Merdeka and Monas for the official ceremonies, while more than half a million citizens participated in events spanning from Monas to the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout.
The celebrations included various community activities, such as a youth-led parade in Central Jakarta promoting unity and a creative cycling challenge by United Bike. In Banjarbaru, Mayor Erna Lisa Halaby oversaw the distribution of 104 waqf land certificates to 53 institutions to ensure legal certainty for religious assets.
However, the holiday was not without controversy. In Pati, Acting Regent Risma Ardhi Chandra issued a public apology after mispronouncing the second principle of Pancasila during the official ceremony, citing physical exhaustion and poor health as the cause. Meanwhile, in Sleman, the 2026 JDIH Awards recognized Ambarketawang village for achieving the highest score in legal documentation and information management.
