Blossom drama explores the life of writer Uno Chiyo
The NHK morning drama Blossom, inspired by the life of prolific writer Uno Chiyo, explores the turbulent journey of its protagonist, Tamu Hayano. The series depicts Tamu’s early life, marked by the loss of her biological mother and her upbringing by her stepmother, Ryo.
Historical accounts of Uno Chiyo reveal a woman of immense determination. After completing her long work ‘Haka o Aku’ in Sapporo, she traveled to Tokyo in 1922 to pursue her literary career. This move involved leaving her husband and the domestic life she found stifling, as she believed that the burdens of housework hindered her creative focus. Her success in Tokyo, bolstered by high manuscript fees and connections with prominent literary figures, established her as a professional writer.
In the drama, actress Ryoko Kuninaka discusses the unique bond between Ryo and Tamu. Despite the lack of biological connection, the characters share a deep trust. The series highlights how their relationship transcends formal titles, such as Tamu’s use of ‘Tama-sama’ to address Ryo, evolving into a profound maternal bond.
