Bílovec Hospital to transition under Opava management

The Moravian-Silesian Region plans to restructure the Bílovec Hospital starting in January. The facility will transition from a joint-stock company to a contributory organization under the management of the Opava Hospital.

Regional officials, including Governor Josef Bělica and Deputy Governor Martin Gebauer, defended the move, stating that funding public money into joint-stock companies is problematic. They noted that Opava was chosen due to its geographic proximity and similar medical service spectrum. Officials emphasized that the scope of care for patients and conditions for employees will remain unchanged, with many staff members expected to see financial improvements.

The decision has met local resistance, with approximately 800 residents signing a petition against the change. Bílovec municipal representatives held an extraordinary meeting to express their desire to maintain acute care services, specifically internal medicine, surgery, and the intensive care unit (ICU). While the mayor, Martin Holub, attributed the public concern to poor communication regarding the hospital's new affiliation, some local council members expressed skepticism based on previous historical threats to the hospital's existence.
