Bludenz waterfall drownings claim three lives

On 28 June, a tragic swimming accident occurred at the Ill river beneath the CKG waterfall in Bludenz, Vorarlberg, Austria. A 40‑year‑old man, his 10‑year‑old son, and a 22‑year‑old companion were swept under by the strong currents and hydraulic forces of a water‑wheel vortex. Despite immediate rescue attempts by the father’s husband, passers‑by, and emergency services, all three victims died. The 22‑year‑old died at the scene, the child succumbed to injuries after being air‑lifted to Feldkirch regional hospital, and the father later passed away at the same hospital. Over 180 responders—including four fire brigades, water‑rescue units, the Red Cross, a rescue helicopter and police—participated in the large‑scale operation. Authorities highlighted the danger of the water‑wheel and urged the public to avoid such spots, noting that even experienced rescuers find the suction forces difficult to overcome.
