Blue algae warnings issued for lakes near Nuremberg and Erlangen

The Service Operation Public Space in Nuremberg has posted warnings against swimming in the Kleiner Dutzendteich due to toxic blue‑algae (cyanobacteria) blooms caused by high water temperatures and nutrient levels. Signage advises that contact can cause skin and eye irritation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, with heightened risk for children, allergy sufferers and pets. Dogs are especially vulnerable, with recent reports of fatal incidents after drinking or licking contaminated water. The city is removing sludge and operating a mowing boat to lower nutrient concentrations.

In nearby Erlangen, authorities have also flagged the Dechsendorfer Weiher for blue‑algae presence. Signs recommend showering after any contact, especially for children and dog owners, and advise avoiding areas with visible algal mats. Water quality is monitored regularly, and a free shower facility is available at the western shore. Both municipalities urge thorough rinsing of skin, eyes and pets after exposure and to seek medical attention if symptoms persist.
