Blue crab invasion disrupts Italian fishing industry

The invasive blue crab is causing significant economic disruption in Italy's lagoons, particularly in the Po Delta south of Venice. The aggressive predator has decimated Manila and mussel populations, damaged fishing nets, and displaced native species.

The impact is severe for local industry; the Polesine fishermen's consortium reported that revenues plummeted by 75 percent to approximately 15 million euros during 2024 and 2025. Additionally, the number of active members in the consortium dropped from 1,500 to 850.

While blue crabs may have been present in the Adriatic since the 1940s—likely introduced via ship ballast water—their population exploded in 2023. Experts, including invasive species specialist Piero Genovesi, suggest that climate change and rising water temperatures have played a significant role in this sudden surge. In response, fishermen and scientists are now attempting to transition from viewing the crab solely as a catastrophe to finding ways to utilize it economically.
