Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan faces contract standoff threatening 300,000 patients while touting drug discount savi

Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of Michigan is in a reimbursement dispute with the University of Michigan Health System. The two parties must agree on a new contract by July 1, 2026 or Michigan Medicine’s southeast Michigan hospitals, clinics and providers will leave BCBS’s commercial and HMO networks, affecting roughly 300,000 insured members. Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement enrollees are not covered by the dispute, but commercial plan members could face higher out‑of‑network costs and premium increases if no deal is reached.

At the same time, BCBS Michigan and Blue Care Network are promoting four prescription‑drug discount programs—High‑Cost Drug Discount Optimization, HelpScript, Drug Adherence Discount and Price Edge. In 2025 the programs collectively saved members more than $100 million in out‑of‑pocket costs and have reduced overall drug spending by tens of millions since their launch, aiming to improve medication adherence and lower overall health‑care expenses.
