Blue Flag certification standards clarified for Bulgarian beaches

Following reports of a pipe found near Sozopol and potential wastewater contamination risks in Sveti Vlas, experts are clarifying the standards of the Blue Flag beach certification. This year, 26 Bulgarian beaches have earned the international Blue Flag status, which recognizes criteria for safety, cleanliness, and beach management.

Gabriela Rumenova, host of the podcast ‘We, the Consumers’, notes that while the certification requires regular microbiological and physico-chemical water testing and the presence of lifeguards and emergency plans, it does not guarantee perfection. She advises tourists to remain vigilant and immediately report issues such as oil spills, unusual odors, or floating debris to lifeguards, the Ministry of Environment and Water, or emergency services via 112.
