Blue-green algae detected in multiple German waters

Cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae, have been detected in various bodies of water across Germany, leading to health warnings and swimming bans. In Bavaria, authorities have issued a precautionary ban at the Rußweiher in Eschenbach and warnings for the Heimstettener See near Munich. Other affected areas include the Deininger Weiher and parts of the Brombachsee.

In Frankfurt, blue-green algae were identified in the Main River near the Höchst ferry terminal. While not a designated bathing area, officials warn against water contact during activities like kayaking or stand-up paddling due to the risk of skin irritation or ingestion. In Iserlohn, the presence of algae in the Seilersee has sparked political debate regarding long-term prevention strategies beyond temporary measures like oxygenation.

Health officials warn that cyanobacteria can produce toxins causing nausea, diarrhea, skin rashes, and fever. Contact can be particularly dangerous for dogs, which may suffer fatal poisoning after drinking contaminated water. High temperatures, drought, and low water levels are cited as primary drivers for the current proliferation.
