Blue-green algae detections trigger swimming warnings in the Netherlands

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) have been detected in several water bodies across the Netherlands, leading to health warnings and swimming advisories. In Nijkerk, the Waterschap Vallei en Veluwe reported a thin floating layer of algae in a pond on Arkemheenweg. Local authorities have placed warning signs advising residents to avoid contact with the water and to keep pets away from swimming or drinking it.

At Meerwijck, a negative swimming advisory has been issued for the Zuidlaardermeer due to deteriorating conditions. Other locations, including Paterswoldsemeer, Ruskenveen, Lettelberterplas, and Kardinge, have also reported sightings of the bacteria or carry warnings.

Contact with blue-green algae can cause skin irritation, as well as gastrointestinal issues if water is swallowed. The bacteria thrive in warm, stagnant, nutrient-rich water. Additionally, algae blooms can cause oxygen depletion in water, which is potentially fatal for fish.
