Blue House denies President Lee Jae-myung term extension rumors

Blue House Senior Secretary for Political Affairs Hong Ik-pyo addressed ongoing political controversies regarding President Lee Jae-myung’s potential for term extension and military deployment to the Hormuz Strait.

Regarding rumors of constitutional amendments for term extension, Hong stated that the President has no intention of seeking a second term and that such a move is not possible under the current constitution. He expressed regret over the persistent controversy and noted that the President may clarify his position directly through a press conference or interview to prevent further political friction.

On the issue of military deployment to the Hormuz Strait, Hong clarified that the government’s position remains undecided. While acknowledging that U.S. influence plays a role, he emphasized that South Korea will make its own sovereign decisions. Discussions are expected to continue following the President’s upcoming overseas tour.

Addressing the controversy over the dismissal of prosecution charges, Hong emphasized that the administration is focused on investigating whether charges were fabricated, stating that the dismissal of charges would be a natural subsequent step if fabrication is proven.
