Blue Impulse documentary film set for December release in Japan

The documentary film ‘Gekijoban Blue Impulse no Sora e’ (Blue Impulse: To the Sky, Theatrical Version) is scheduled for a nationwide release in Japan starting December 11, 2026. Narrated by Win Morisaki, the film is a re-edited and expanded version of a previous documentary showcased at the TBS Documentary Film Festival 2026.

The film follows the 2025 season of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s aerobatic team, Blue Impulse. It highlights their efforts to perform demonstration flights at the Osaka-Kansai Expo after initial attempts were canceled due to weather. Using 360-degree cameras installed in cockpits, the production captures immersive footage of flights at speeds of approximately 800 km/h.

Beyond the pilots, the documentary explores the lives of maintenance crews and the families supporting the team, focusing on the human drama and the transition of skills between departing and incoming members.
