Blue Initiative launches maritime cybersecurity vulnerability database
A coalition of maritime and cybersecurity organizations has launched the Blue Initiative, a free public database designed to catalog information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) vulnerabilities affecting ships, ports, and offshore infrastructure.
The initiative is a collaborative effort involving Cydome Security, ClassNK, Bureau Veritas, the Maritime Transportation System Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MTS-ISAC), and Rakuten Maritime. The database aims to provide a single, open source of truth to help maritime organizations identify and prioritize risks to their specific vessels and equipment.
Currently, the database contains nearly 30,000 records, including over 2,000 vulnerabilities classified as critical based on CVSS scores. It also tracks 586 vulnerabilities listed in CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog and identifies 37 vulnerabilities specifically tailored to maritime systems. The platform categorizes flaws across navigation, propulsion, communications, industrial controls, and onboard IT systems, offering alerts for newly disclosed or exploited threats.
