Blue light impact on sleep is more complex than previously believed

Recent research and expert analysis suggest that the impact of blue light on sleep is more complex than previously thought. While blue light does affect the circadian rhythm by influencing melatonin secretion through melanopsin-sensitive cells in the retina, evidence does not support the idea that blue light is the sole cause of sleep disruption.

A 2023 Cochrane analysis of 17 randomized studies found no convincing evidence that blue-light-filtering glasses improve sleep for the general population or significantly reduce eye strain. Experts, including Russell Foster, a professor of circadian neuroscience at Oxford, note that the intensity, duration, and timing of light exposure are critical factors.

Beyond light exposure, other factors play a significant role in sleep quality. The total time spent on devices—often displacing actual sleep time—and the nature of the content consumed are major contributors. Engaging activities, such as social media interaction, gaming, or consuming emotionally stimulating content, can keep the brain in a state of alertness, making it harder to transition to sleep.
