Blue Mesa Reservoir faces boat ramp limits and algae warnings

Recreational users at Colorado’s Blue Mesa Reservoir face new restrictions and health warnings due to seasonal conditions. As of late August 2026, the National Park Service has limited all developed boat ramps—including Elk Creek, Lake Fork, and Iola—to hand-launching non-trailered watercraft. Trailered boats are no longer considered safe to launch or retrieve at Elk Creek due to low water levels.

Additionally, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is warning against exposure to toxic algae blooms, which are more likely to occur as water temperatures rise. These blooms can appear like spilled paint or pea soup and can cause skin irritation, nausea, and fever in humans, and can be fatal to pets. Officials advise checking water conditions and rinsing with fresh water immediately if contact is suspected.
