Blue Moon Visible Over Brazil This Weekend

A second full moon in May, known as a “Blue Moon,” will occur on the early morning of Sunday, May 31, 2026. NASA defines a Blue Moon as the second full moon within a calendar month, a rarity that happens roughly every two to three years. The first full moon of the month occurred at the beginning of May, allowing a second one before June.

In Brazil, the Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET) confirms that the Moon will rise before dawn and be visible to the naked eye. Observers are advised to seek dark locations away from city lights, as cloud cover or humidity can affect visibility. No telescopes or binoculars are required, but clear skies will provide the best view of the lunar disc, which will retain its usual color despite the name.

The phenomenon does not alter the Moon’s appearance but offers a popular opportunity for amateur astronomers and the general public to watch a rare astronomical event.
