Blue Mountain Racing plans new Cape Town circuit for 2031 F1 return
Blue Mountain Racing (BMR) has announced plans to develop a new FIA Grade 1 and FIM Grade A motorsport circuit in the Swartland region, north of Cape Town, South Africa. The privately funded project aims to host a Formula 1 South African Grand Prix as early as 2031.
The proposed facility will be situated on a 600-hectare site acquired in April 2026. Unlike a street circuit, the permanent track is designed to utilize the natural elevation changes of the area, with a planned length between 4.5 km and 5.5 km. The development is intended to accommodate both Formula 1 and MotoGP.
South Africa has not hosted a Formula 1 race since 1993 at Kyalami. The project seeks to bring racing back to the continent, which is currently the only inhabited continent without a spot on the F1 calendar. Proponents highlight Cape Town’s international appeal, including its airport connectivity and tourism assets, as key factors for the bid.
