Blue Mountains motorists warned of major traffic delays
Motorists and freight operators traveling through the Blue Mountains are advised to prepare for significant traffic delays over the next two weekends. Ongoing piling works on Mitchell's Causeway have resulted in the closure of the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass. Detours are currently in place via the Darling Causeway, Chifley Road, and Main Street in Lithgow, which can add up to an hour of travel time during peak periods.
Additional congestion is expected due to major regional events. Following the Bathurst 1000, which concludes on Sunday, October 11, 2026, heavy traffic is anticipated as spectators return home. Specifically, heavy vehicle operators are advised to avoid eastbound travel between Lithgow and Katoomba on Monday, October 12, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, and Tuesday, October 13, from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. Further delays are expected in Cowra, Blayney, and Bathurst due to the Lap 162 event scheduled for Monday afternoon.
