Blue Note jazz club to open in London, challenging Ronnie Scott’s
The London jazz scene is entering a period of intense competition as the world-renowned Blue Note jazz club prepares to open its first London venue in Covent Garden. The new establishment, an offshoot of the famous New York institution, will feature two performance spaces and a supper-club experience, with opening acts including Grammy Award-winning pianist Robert Glasper.
This arrival poses a direct challenge to Ronnie Scott’s, the legendary Soho venue that has been a staple of the British jazz scene since 1959. In response to the new competition, Ronnie Scott’s has recently invested millions into a complete reconstruction of its Upstairs club, upgrading the space with new decor and higher ticket prices.
While both venues aim to capitalize on a resurgence of interest in jazz, they face a challenging economic environment characterized by high costs for consumers in central London. Local officials, including Westminster City Council deputy leader Tim Barnes, have expressed support for the new venue, noting its potential to contribute to the city's live music landscape.
