Blue roadside reflectors aim to deter wildlife from road crossings
Blue reflectors installed on roadside markers are designed to reduce vehicle collisions with wildlife. The theory suggests that when car headlights hit these reflectors, the resulting blue light acts as a warning signal to animals, such as wild boar, prompting them to stay away from the road.
Unlike physical barriers, this system allows animals to move freely while aiming to increase road safety. However, the effectiveness of these reflectors is a subject of debate. Organizations such as ADAC and the German Hunting Association (Deutscher Jagdverband) claim the reflectors have a positive impact, reporting collision reductions of up to 80 percent in certain locations.
In contrast, research conducted by scientists from Göttingen suggests that animals may not react to the blue light in a way that reliably deters them from crossing the road.
