Blue whales tracked via acoustic technology in the Pacific
Scientists are utilizing bioacoustics to investigate the migratory patterns of blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus), particularly in the South Pacific. Because these whales are pelagic and travel vast distances in deep, inaccessible waters, direct observation is often difficult.
To overcome these challenges, researchers use hydrophones—underwater microphones that convert acoustic pressure waves into detectable signals. While this method does not allow for the direct observation of every individual or the creation of a complete, automated migratory map, it provides critical data regarding the presence, distribution, and seasonal behavior of whale populations.
Modern hydrophone technology can be deployed in various ways, including installation on the seabed, suspension within the water column, integration into autonomous vehicles, or placement on surface buoys.
