Blueberries Linked to Multiple Health Benefits in New Report
A recent health report cites seven science‑backed benefits of blueberries, including lower blood pressure, improved memory, better exercise recovery, antioxidant activity, protection against DNA damage, blood‑sugar management and cardiovascular support. The fruit is low in calories (84 per cup), high in nutrients such as fiber, vitamin C and vitamin K, and about 85 % water. Its antioxidant power comes from flavonoids, especially anthocyanins, which help protect cells from free‑radical damage.
Blueberries belong to the genus Vaccinium and are native to North America. The most common cultivated varieties in the United States are highbush and lowbush (wild) blueberries, the latter being smaller but richer in certain antioxidants. Historically, dried blueberries were a key ingredient in Native American pemmican and early mountain‑man provisions, and today they are widely available year‑round across the United States.
