BlueCross BlueShield premiums rise sharply in Alabama

Health insurance premiums and out-of-pocket expenses in Alabama can now exceed double the average monthly mortgage payment in the United States, according to a report by journalist Alex Berenson.

BlueCross BlueShield holds an 84 percent share of Alabama’s private health insurance market, according to the American Medical Association. The report highlights the case of Alabama resident Cristopher Hoyt, whose family of three faces a 2027 renewal rate of $4,287.61 per month. This represents an increase of nearly 36 percent from the previous year and a total premium increase of over 70 percent across the last two years.

For 2027, Hoyt’s projected total costs, including an in-network maximum of $12,000, are estimated at $51,451.32. This monthly premium is significantly higher than the median U.S. monthly mortgage payment of $2,134 reported by Bankrate in June.
