Bluefin tuna wash ashore on Spanish beaches

Several massive bluefin tuna, weighing approximately 300 kilograms each, have washed ashore on beaches in Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada. In Torrevieja, three specimens were found at Cala del Palangre, Los Locos beach, and near the Juan Aparicio promenade. In Pilar de la Horadada, a tuna was discovered near the mouth of the Seco River at Mil Palmeras beach.

Local authorities, including municipal technicians, the Acciona-Actúa cleaning service, and the Local Police, coordinated the removal of the carcasses using trucks and cranes to clear the beaches before peak hours. The dead fish are typically sent for incineration.

The strandings have prompted speculation regarding potential losses from offshore fish-farming operations. The region near San Pedro del Pinatar and El Gorguel is a major global center for bluefin tuna fattening, where fish are raised in cages for months. While the exact cause of death remains unconfirmed without necropsies, the geographic pattern suggests that currents and winds may have carried the fish from these industrial fattening zones to the Vega Baja coastline.
